"These infrastructure projects are expected to increase the electrification ratio up to 91 percent," PLN`s Regional Business Director, Djoko R. Abumanan, stated here on Friday.
The 10 thousand-MW plants are part of the 35 thousand-MW national power plant project. Currently, the Mahakam System has received 200 MW of additional power from the Teluk Balikpapan steam power plant.
Mahakam System is an electricity generation and distribution network that covers the cities of Balikpapan, Samarinda, Tenggarong, and Bontang.
The Mahakam system requires up to 360-400 MW of power during the peak hours between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. local time daily. Under normal circumstances, PLN can provide up to 600 MW of power.
PLN also supplies electricity to three industrial areas of East Kalimantan: the Kariangau Industrial Area in Balikpapan, with an excess power scheme of 2x15 MW; Buluminung Industrial Area in North Penajam Paser District; and Maloy, East Kutai District.
"We also provide 2x7 MW of surplus power to the Tanah Kuning Industrial Estate, Bulungan District, in North Kalimantan Province," Abumanan noted.
Moreover, after conducting a survey, PLN in East and North Kalimantan has revoked the subsidy of 347,698 consumers of 900 volt-amperes electricity since the start of 2017, leaving a total of 40,867 subscribers who are believed to receive the subsidy. (*)
