Balikpapan, E Kalimantan (Antara) - Five patients have died of dengue fever since January 2016 in Balikpapan city, East Kalimantan, according to local Health Office spokesperson Balerina.

"Three of the dengue patients died in January, and two others died in February, and most of them were children," Balerina remarked here on Friday.

She revealed that the number of dengue cases in Balikpapan since January this year has reached 193, with five fatalities.

Last week, Achmad Rudiansjah, chief of the local Health Service Office, remarked in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, that 11 people had died of dengue fever since January.

He revealed that most of the victims, with the count reaching three, who had died of dengue fever spread by the aedes aegypti mosquito, were from Kotabaru District.

One victim each had died in the districts of Banjar, Barito Kuala, Talah Laut, Tanah Bumbu, Tapin, Hulu Sungai Utara, Hulu Sungai Tengah, and Hulu Sungai Selatan.

According to the health official, the total number of dengue victims until January 26 this year stood at 838 patients. This year, the number of patients is yet smaller than the figure reported in the same period last year, which stood at 1,180 patients, of which 15 had died.

The current seasonal change from dry to rainy season has led to a spike in the number of dengue fever cases in several regions across the country.

In Lebak District, Banten Province, at least three patients have reportedly died of the same disease since January, according to a local health official Dr Firman Rahmutallah.

"Of the three fatalities, one was from Rangkasbitung and two others were from Serang," Dr Firman Rahmutallah, the head of Communicable Diseases Eradication and Prevention of the Lebak District Health Office, stated in Lebak on Tuesday.

Rahmutallah noted that dengue cases continued to surface in Lebak district following an increase in rainfall in the area, so the people have been reminded to stay vigilant against the outbreak of the disease. (*)
