Penajam, E Kalimantan (Antaranews Kaltim) - Work was halted at the Lawe Lawe dam project in the district of of Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan Timur, on financial difficulty, a district official said.

"The budget fund of the district administration is not sufficient to continue and finish the project," head of the Housing, Planning and Urban Development Division of the District Public Works and Housing Office Supardi said here on Tuesday.

The project construction, which began in 2014, is already 85 percent completed, Supardi said, adding work was stopped since November, 2017.

The contract for the project construction is Rp129 billion and only Rp40 billion had been spent, he added.

The district administration already asked for financial assistance from the public works and housing ministry, but so far no answer is forthcoming.

Without financial support from the central government, the project would be carried over to 2018, he said, adding the project still needs an additional budget of Rp100 billion.

"The fund would be used for the construction of the office of the operator and other supporting facilities such as electrical mechanic or water gate," he said.

The Law Law dam occupies a 200 hectare plot of land and it will have a capacity to hold up to 6.5 million liters of water. It would a source of standard and clean water for the Penajam Drinking Water Processing Company. (*)
