Samarinda, E Kalimantan (ANTARA Kaltim) - Balikpapan, East Kalimantan Province, will host the Governors Climate and Forests Taskforce (GCF) meeting, which will be participated by 35 provinces and states from nine countries worldwide.
"The GCF will be held in Balikpapan for five days from Sept 25 to 29, 2017," the Head of Environment Office, East Kalimantan Province, Riza Indra Riadi, said here on Tuesday.
According to Riza, the GCF is a collaboration at a subnational level, consisting of 35 states and provinces from nine countries around the world, which is aimed at sustaining forests and addressing climate change issues.
The governments at the sub-national level play an important role in realizing the various national commitments that have been formulated, especially those set in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement.
Indonesia is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent by 2030 as defined in the Paris Agreement.
The GCF annual meeting in Balikpapan called the Balikpapan Challenge, which is a sub-national government initiative at the provincial and state levels, aims to bring together governments, corporations, civil society, farmers, and indigenous people in one commitment to reduce deforestation.
The Balikpapan Challenge is a multi-phase process with practical and tangible ways to achieve sustainable low-emission development.
"This process will begin at the GCF annual meeting in the Balikpapan Challenge, then proceed at the UNFCCC convention in Bonn, Germany, until the 2018 GCF annual meeting," Riza explained. (*)
