Samarinda, E.Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - The production value of micro and small manufacturing industries in East Kalimantan Province in the first quarter of 2017 has grown by 5.74 percent as compared to the same period last year.

"The growth is driven by the development of the food industry group at 21.83 percent," Head of the Central Statistics Agency of East Kalimantan Province M. Habibullah stated here on Friday.

The food industry group encompasses the processing of agricultural, forestry, and fishery products into fast food items.

Other groups that recorded growth are the leather industry, at 21.03 percent; printing and reproduction of recording media, at 17.92 percent; transportation equipment, by 13.24 percent; and textile industry, at 5.33 percent.

According to Habibullah, micro- and small-scale processing industries play an important role in economic development, given the relatively small labor intensity and investment.

These conditions also make micro and small processing industries more flexible and adaptable to the evolving conditions in the local and global markets, Habibullah said.

The development of micro and small processing industries can contribute to business diversification and the acceleration of changes in the economic structure, he added. (*)
