Samarinda, E Kalimantan (ANTARA Kaltim) - East Kalimantan Province has nine national strategic projects now being developed, according to the head of Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda)Zairin Zain.

Zain said here on Sunday that the nine projects included the Balikpapan - Samarinda toll road.

The toll road connected the Karingau industrial area with Bulumuning Balikpapan and Penajam.

He said the second project is a railway project which is a central government project. This railway project will connect all areas in Kalimantan and is expected to be completed in 2020.

It is still in the stage of engineering design and environmental impact analysis (Amdal) by the ministry of transportation.

The first route being prepared will run from Tanjung District (South Kalimantan) to Paser District - North Penajam Paser - Balikpapan - Samarinda (East Kalimantan) stretching 233.7 kilometers with an estimated cost of Rp38.95 billion.

He said that the following route will connect four districts in East Kalimtan: West Kutai - Paser - Penajam - Balikpapan stretching 203 km with an estimated cost of Rp22.1 billion.

The third national project is the construction of a new seaport and port expansion of the Trans-Kalimantan Maloy Batuta special economic zone in East Kutai District.

Construction of oil refinery in Bontang City is the fourth national strategic project, he said. It has an investment of US$14.9 billion. Scheduled for completion in 2024, the refinery plant has a production capacity of 300 thousand barrels per day.

The fifth national strategic project is the expansion of the oil refinery plant in Balikpapan, namely increasing its production capacity from 260 thousand barrels per day to 360 thousand barrels per day with an operational target in 2019.

Zain said that the sixth is the continuation of the Marangkayu Dam development project. The dam which is targeted to be operational in 2019 will serve as raw water source, flood control and a source of agricultural irrigation.

He said that the seventh strategic project is the development of the Teritip Dam, the eighth project is development of the Maloy industrial area and the ninth one is the development of a food estate. (*)
