Samarinda (ANTARA News) - Bank Indonesia (BI) said it is optimistic the economy of East Kalimantan would continue to grow until the end of 2017 as all indicators points to positive development.

"We predict the economy of East Kalimantan would grow 2.5 percent. In the second quarter the province`s economy already grew 0.76 percent from the first quarter," head of the representative office of the central bank for East Kalimantan M. Nur said here on last weekend.

The mining and quarry sector is still the largest contributor to the economic growth, but the growth recorded in the agricultural sector, notably in crude palm oil (CPO) industry, was more encouraging, Nur said.

The optimism about the economic expansion of the province was based on the development of its Gross Regional Domestic Product (PDRB)in the second quarter of 2017.

The PDRB in the second quarter grew 0.78 percent to Rp112.85 trillion from the previous quarter. Year-on-year, however, the growth rate was lower at 3.6 percent in the second quarter of this year compared to a growth of 3.9 percent in the first quarter of the year. Year-on-year

Nur said East Kalimantan grew slower than other provinces in Kalimantan but it is still the largest contributor to the total PDRB of Kalimantan. East Kalimantan accounts for 52.44 percent of the total PDRB of Kalimantan, which is made up of five provinces.

"The economic structure of East Kalimantan is still dominated by the mining and quarry sector which accounts for 46.13 percent of its economic value," Nur said.

The manufacturing sector accounts for 18.89 percent and the agricultural sector for 7.87 percent.

East Kalimantan is the richest in natural resources over the four other provinces - North Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan. (*)
