Samarinda (ANTARA Kaltim) - East Kalimantan is entering a new eras of modernization in farming mainly necessitated by shrinking number of farm workers in the region.

Head of the Food Crop Agriculture Office of East Kalimantan Ibrahim said most farmers in the province have to use modern farm equipment both in planting and harvest times.

The farmers use hand tractors, threshing machines and trans planters for efficiency as they could no longer rely on farm workers, Ibrahim said .

The use of modern equipment is not only for efficiency but necessitated by the fact that they could no longer rely on man power, he said.

In addition the pay asked by far workers is too high now that mechanization is more efficient in cost, he said.

He said East Kalimantan has wide lands potentials for large scale modern farming especially in the regencies of Kutai Kartanegara, Kutai Barat, Paser and Panajam Paser Utara.

Even urban areas such as Samarinda and Balikpapan also produce farms goods. (*)
